Physiologically inspired coding strategies for cochlear implants

چکیده

Cochlear implants are the first and until now the only existing prosthesis that can substitute an entire sensory system – the hearing system – nearly completely. After implantation and a period of rehabilitation, most deaf patients are able to use the telephone or listen to the radio with their cochlear implant system. Although top performing cochlear implant subjects understand speech nearly perfectly in quiet, large difficulties remain in acoustically complex environments. As well, music appraisal remains poor. It can be assumed that most of these problems arise due to the entrainment of fibers of the auditory nerve to the electrical pulse pattern applied in current stimulation strategies. Several methods were proposed to circumvent this rather artifical stimulation mode. We present methods which account for neurophysiological and neuroanatomical properties of the auditory nerve and cochlear nucleus. To quantify the outcome of these methods we developed several experimental tests.

Preclinical Stress Test for Coding Strategies in Cochlear Implants

Although modern cochlear implants (CI) are able to restore speech perception to a high degree, there is still a large potential for improvements e.g. in music perception and speech discrimination in noise. To evaluate and optimize novel coding strategies a toolbox was developed which calculates the excitation of the auditory nerve to sound stimuli. The toolbox includes detailed models of the CI...

Speech Processing Strategies for Cochlear Prostheses-the Past, Present and Future: a Tutorial Review

Cochlear Implants are widely accepted prosthetic devices that improve the hearing ability of people with profound hearing loss. The cochlear implant speech processor is responsible for decomposing the input sound into different frequency bands and delivering the most appropriate pattern to the electrodes. The performance of the cochlear prostheses depends on various parameters such as number of...

Assessment of Fine Structure Processing Strategies in Unilaterally Deafened Cochlear Implant Users

This study aimed to investigate the speech perception and subjective preference of unilaterally deafened cochlear implant users for two different speech coding strategies. Thirteen subjects who received a cochlear implant were provided with 2 maps that differed in the speech coding strategy, FS4 or FS4-p (MED-EL). Subjects were requested to alternate between the two maps daily for two weeks and...

Modeling Refractoriness in Phenomenological Models of Electrically-Stimulated Auditory Nerve Fibers

The ability of cochlear implants (CIs) to restore hearing for profoundly deaf people is based on electrical stimulation of the auditory nerve fibers (ANFs). Such stimulation allows CI users to understand speech in quiet conditions but researchers and device manufacturers are still optimizing coding strategies to improve the ability of CI users to cope in complex listening environments with mult...
